Middle School Conversion - Oxford Area School District - Chester County, Pennsylvania
Completed in September 2007, this addition and major renovation project converted an existing 1950’s high school into an 800-student middle school.
In response to being situated on a land-locked residential site, the original single story, multi-level, high school shop and undersized library wing was demolished to make way for a 52,000 square foot, fully accessible, two-story addition, including a new library, administration and nurse suites, separate student and visitor entrances, and 32 new classrooms.
Many green building strategies were incorporated into the building's design. The original main entrance was converted to an events entrance for auditorium, gymnasium and after school functions. A new bus parking area was created adjacent to the new student entrance. Wide corridors with borrowed light windows facilitate and enhance student movement between “Team” style classrooms.
Wide corridors with borrowed light windows incorporated into the design of the new addition facilitate and enhance student movement between the “Team” style classrooms. The existing building underwent substantial renovations including completely new, high efficiency, mechanical, electrical, and building automation systems, energy efficient roof and exterior window replacement, and extensive masonry repairs. Major renovations were also completed within the auditorium, gymnasium, and cafeteria.
The interior of the old classroom wing was completely rebuilt, providing “new” classrooms within this area and a seamless transition to the new building addition.
