Wausau East High School…echoing the spirit of generations… demonstrating excellence around every corner…welcoming the community with resources for the future…

The planning process - Answering the call to carry on tradition…
The new Wausau East High School is the result of collaboration by students, staff, administration, community members, and the design team. Together they developed the concept for the comprehensive school that would replace the old 1930’s East High and reflect its character through suspended canopies, raised clerestory-lighted lobbies, and other Art Deco details of the era.

The committee defined an educational program that is reflected in the eight learning clusters, which include classroom groupings, staff planning, and team work areas.

Providing a comfortable, safe, and functional community environment …
The committee defined the need for multiple venues and community access, reflected in the layout are three clearly defined entry points, user friendly and easily accessible public spaces, and an easily managed building.

The clarity of the three-winged plan makes this large building comfortable and understandable for visitors, groups appropriate spaces, provides security through zoning, and separates crowds, noise, and traffic during simultaneous functions.

Serving students with an optimal learning environment and accessible resources…
Daylit student clusters include staff planning areas that are centrally located to provide easy access and passive supervision of resource centers, team learning areas, and lockers. Grouping these resources allows students to stay in the academic wing most of the day, reduces transition time, and makes the building more intimate.  By grouping a team of staff and students together, one-on-one relationships are enhanced and nurtured.  Fully-integrated technology, state-of-the-art energy conservation systems, and quality materials make Wausau East an optimal environment for learning.

The physical environment - If you listen carefully you will hear echoes of the past and hope for the future…
Site programming requirements were carefully planned to maintain the surrounding wetlands and provide onsite water management; one-third of the site was left undeveloped.  Complimenting this natural site are the multi-use fields that reduced quantity of fields, car and bus parking that were divided and located to serve a variety of spectator and school needs, and the multi-story building that minimized the footprint and impervious surfaces.

Long-lasting, low maintenance, energy efficient, and regional materials such as brick, precast concrete, Wausau tile (terrazzo), and burnished concrete block were selected.  The systems throughout the building including heat recovery, positive displacement ventilation, occupancy sensors, and daylight harvesting photo cells were selected for their energy efficiency and savings. Through operable windows around the perimeter and courtyard, daylight reaches all learning spaces.
